What is glaze?

Glaze is a layer of glass that is fused onto a ceramic surface. Glaze is non-porous making the surface hygienic. It is also decorative, providing color and texture to the surface.Pottery glaze begins as a power composed of glass-forming materials(silica), fluxes, and stabilizers. (flux aid in lowering the melting point of the glass materials and stabilizers keep the glaze from ‘sliding’ off the pot.)Once fired in a pottery kiln, the power melts forming the beautiful glaze.
